You must have will

Maestro Daniel Barenboim gave a series of masterclass to young talents and that series is available on youtube. The masterclass participants were up and coming talents from all over they world (were - as Lang Lang was a participant), and they all performed movements of Beethoven's sonatas.

When Lang Lang was playing, Maestro Barenboim told him, he needed be believe that it was possible to do a crescendo on a single note on the piano, although it was physically impossible. An audience member then asked for him to clarify on this point. Maestro Barenboim, then gave a little personal anecdote about a lesson he had with the great Horowitz when he was 14.

"I was taken to play for none other than Horowitz... he said some nice things, he said some critical things.... At the end of the thing he said something that I'll never forget. 'You know, you must always have will'. In other words you must want. It's not enough to know there's a crescendo, it's not enough to do a crescendo. You must want and you must have the will to do that. And if you have the will, and you have sufficient knowledge of how this phenomena of sound functions, how it relates to silence, how it relates to each other, what is the relation between the vertical aspects of music (which comes in chords), and the horizental, the linear [...] And if you have the will to express things and to bring everything that you know and feel to this expression and you have knowledge and are conscious of the laws of nature and the laws of the function of the sound, then you create an illusion. "

"I want to take my grade 8 [in piano] and get a degree in music."

AH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Not so easy hor. Grade 8 is not where near music college standard hor. FAR FROM IT. People with Grade 8 are not even admitted into NAFA. And it isn't a music college to rave about.

This is bad.
